Creature Feature: Carlos the Umbrella Cockatoo

Carlos the Umbrella Cockatoo visits Twin Oaks RV Park!

We recently had the great pleasure of finally meeting one of our infamous long-time campers.  His name is Carlos and he’s been coming to Twin Oaks for ten years!  Carlos is an Umbrella Cockatoo and hits the road with his much-loved mother, Louise Gerber and their driver, Louise’s husband Bob.

Carlos is a very chatty bird, although truthfully, like most small children, his mother had to interpret what he was saying.  Carlos has his own repertoire of hip sayings. For example, instead of goodbye, Carlos squawks, “Toodle loo boo boo!”

Carlos loves to cuddle his mama!

You have to keep a close eye on Carlos though, as the first chance he gets he will unlatch his cage if left unlocked and slip out to spend the dinner hour nibbling on your pant leg! (True story – ask Bob!)

We sure did enjoy your visit Carlos and look forward to seeing you and your family again very soon!

Witness the Spinning Evening Primrose

Make your reservation to visit Twin Oaks RV Park one evening this spring for a chance to possibly witness the miraculous blooming of our Spinning Evening Primrose. For those of you who don’t know, the Spinning Evening Primrose is a beautiful, yellow flower that adds drama to the evening. You see, after staying rolled up all day, every night about 8 pm, the flowers bloom. Suddenly. Quickly. With a pop!

The 1 1/2” bright-yellow flowers only open at dusk. What makes them really spectacular is the fact that the coiled flowers spin as they literally spring open. Imagine seeing a whole bush of 50-100 of these large yellow flowers spinning as they open within a matter of seconds. It is like watching timelapse photography!

The primrose nightly show begins in May and continues through mid-July. So book some time, pull up a chair and watch the flowers bloom at Twin Oaks RV Park!

Here’s a video I shot of our primrose in bloom — so fun!
